Creation and Addition of Newsgroups
(Updated 5.4.1999)

Overview

Access to Internet electronic newsgroups is provided to newsreaders in the UB community.

Standards

In general, UB does not provide access to newsgroups that appear to contain data that violates copyright law (such as stolen software, e.g.: "warez" newsgroups).

The News System Administrator may choose not to provide access to newsgroups that will have a negative impact on the performance or storage space of the news server system. Newsgroups that have a very high volume of articles, or contain very large articles, may not be provided for performance or storage space reasons. The *.binaries newsgroups are commonly affected by this restriction.

In addition, UB will not add a complete hierarchical newsgroup at one time. For example, adding the group comp.sys.laptops would be acceptable, but adding the complete comp.sys.* hierarchy would not. Newsgroups in a hierarchy such as comp.sys.* must be requested and added individually.

The News System Administrator, working with CIT Academic Services personnel, decides which newsgroups will be provided on a case-by-case basis.

Users should be aware that information provided in newsgroups may be inaccurate.

UB Newsgroups must be "sponsored" by the Student Association or Academic Departments (for class newsgroups).
