  User Disk Quota
(Updated 8.22.2006)

Overview

Each UB IT name (account) is associated with three kinds of disk space allocations, the home directory area, UBFS home fileset space and central email disk space. For other disk space allocations see Related Information

Standards

Each faculty, staff, and student at UB is given an initial disk quota allocated as follows:
  • UBUnix home directory: 1 MB
  • UBFS: 15 MB
  • Central mail: 150 MB
Disk quota increase requests are handled by the CIT Accounts Office on an individual basis.

Process

Individual faculty, staff or graduate students may request extra quota for their UBFS home fileset, up to 300 MB.  UBFS home fileset quota may also be increased for undergraduate students if it is required by a course and the request must be made by their instructor on the students' behalf. Other requests by affiliated members of UB are handled on an individual basis.

Related Information

Other file space may be granted based on special needs, including
  • Shared space for multiple users who need larger file space (up to 300 MB) may be allocated in  the UBFS shared area.   See Shared Disk Quota for more information.
  • UBWings space for users who need an area on the UBWings machine (wings.buffalo.edu) for delivering information via the Internet in support of their research, instruction and administration. See Wings Disk Space for more information.
  • Special shared UBFS space for courses which may need to allow for protected individual student write access.
Tape Storage is available for tape owners. CIT uses a software product called REELlibrarian (rl) to manage UNIX users' magnetic tapes, including 3490 and DLT cartridges, 4mm and 8mm cassettes. See Tape Storage for more information.

Temporary disk space (/temp) can be used for storage of files which are needed for only a short period. It is not to be used as permanent storage space. This space is not backed up and files may be deleted without notice.
