  Tape Usage Policy
(Updated 3.24.2004)

Overview

Tape Storage is no longer available for tape owners.

Standards

We have been informed by the maker of REELlibrarian that they will no longer be supporting the software. REELlibrarian was a networked tape management system on UBUnix which controlled a centrally stored tape library. It allowed users to request an operator to mount or unmount a tape, to read and write data to/from the tape, and to store information about the tape in a central database. The loss of support coupled with the extremely limited usage of the tape service has led CIT to terminate this service as of May 7th, 2004 or earlier, if  all current tapes are withdrawn from the library.

CIT suggests that users wishing to maintain the information stored on their tapes should consider converting from tape to CD or DVD media. To that end there are many commercial tape reading and conversion services companies available.

CIT provides the following information as a service; none of the listed companies are under contract to the University and these are suggestions rather than recommendations.
