  Shared UBFS Quota
(Updated 8.20.2002)

Overview

The university's institutional file system UBFS is UB's implementation of the Open Software Foundation's Distributed File System - DFS. Shared UBFS quota is primarily for multiuser time limited special projects, research or instructional needs.   These projects or research, involving multiple individuals requiring write permission, may be allocated a special fileset quota up to 300 MB.  In exceptional cases greater quota may be allocated.  Shared filesets are located under the /ubfs/shared/ub directory tree.   This space is included as part of the standard system backup process for user files.

Standards

Shared space is intended for use by  a group of users which may cross departmental or other organizational lines. Faculty and staff may request up to 300 MB for the fileset. They must specify the amount of space and justify the need. Most research and instructional reasons are acceptable. Exclusions are: email, backup, and WEB area (see UBWings Disk Space Policy). The requester must also give a time limit for the request, i.e., when he/she expects to no longer need the space.  Since this fileset quota is temporarily allocated, it is the requester's responsibility to request an extension or to "backup" her/his files to another area when the fileset quota expires.

Process

  • Contact the CIT Help Desk.
  • The following information is required: the requester's name, phone number, campus address, UB IT name (username), e-mail address, requested disk quota and the time frame. A preferred directory name should also be included, this name should reflect the name of the PI or the research project. A secondary contact is also required, this may be a member of the research group or the department chair.
  • If the number of individuals expected to access the space is greater than 10 then the creation of a special UNIX group may be requested.  (See  UBUNIX Special Group Policy )
  • You may be contacted by a CIT staff member to clarify the information submitted and to better determine the required quota.
When the quota has been setup, the clients will be notified via e-mail with standard information on how to change directory to access the UBFS space , how to check quota and when the space allocation will expire.
