Oracle Accounts
(Updated 8.1.2003)

Overview

Anyone affiliated with UB having a valid UBUnix account may have an Oracle account within the Academic Oracle System (AOS) for instructional use. Typical uses of accounts include:
  • Courses requiring Oracle (i.e. Database Courses)
  • Independent study projects
  • Research projects
  • Personal educational use (e.g. "want to learn databases")

Standards

  • Quotas:
Initial quotas for Oracle accounts are set to 400 KBytes. Keep in mind that Oracle quota is different from UBUnix and email quota. Oracle account quota is impacted by Oracle objects including tables, indexes, and stored procedures. See the policy on User Disk Quota for more information about UBUnix and email quotas

  • Expiration:
Oracle accounts created automatically per registration in a database related class are expired two weeks after the close of classes for the respective semester. Oracle accounts created at the explicit request of an individual (for independent study, research, etc.) are expired 6 months from the day of account creation. Requests for account extensions must be sent to the AOS Database Administrator.

Process

There are two ways to obtain an Oracle account:
  1. Registration in a class requiring an Oracle account:
If you're registered in a class requiring Oracle then an account will automatically be created for you. Your instructor should inform you of this and notify you when your account is available (typically after the Add/Drop period).

Instructors requiring Oracle accounts for courses they're offering should submit an email request to the AOS Database Administrator. The request should include:

    1. Instructor's name
    2. Course number (e.g. MFC312)
    3. Course registration number (e.g. 037901)
    4. Date that accounts are needed by (preferrably sometime after the Add/Drop period for the semester).

  2. Explicitly requesting an Oracle account for instructional purpose:
To obtain an Oracle account for non-class related instructional purposes (e.g. "want to learn Oracle", independent study) you must contact the AOS Database Administrator at ascit-dba@buffalo.edu.
You may also pick up an Oracle Account request form at the CIT Help Desk Walk-in Office (255 Fronczak) and they can direct you to the Database Administrator.
