Unix Groups
(Updated 5.4.1999)

Overview

The purpose of a special UNIX group is for sharing files among users in the same group. A group can be a departmental office, a research team or a project team.

Standards

Faculty and staff may request a group be established. For a research group, the username of the principle investigator (PI) is used as the group name. Group membership is open to faculty, staff, grad and undergrads. Requests for additions to a special group must be made by the PI or an appropriate individual in the group such as a node support person.

Process

  • Clients contact the CIT Accounts Office to request a special UNIX group be setup or that a new user be added to an existing special group.
  • The client will need to supply a suggested group name, the justification for the group, the username of the responsible individual along with his/her campus address, phone number, and email address, and a list of usernames of proposed group members.
  • After the group is created and populated the CIT Accounts Office will notify the requester via email.
