  Email Alias Policy
(Updated 5.4.1999)

Overview

E-mail aliases can be used to define mailing lists which include multiple recipients within a department or an organization.

E-mail alias requests are handled by the CIT Accounts Office on an individual basis.

Standards

An e-mail alias should not conflict with a current or potential normal UBUnix account or DCE principal. E-mail aliases should conform to one or more of the following rules:

  • It must contain a hyphen.
  • It should begin with a 2 or 3 letter abbreviation related to the department or organization requesting it.
  • It should be between 9 and 30 characters long.
  • It should be as descriptive as possible of the department or organization making the request.

Any e-mail alias that is less than 9 characters and does not contain a hyphen is unacceptable.

Process

  • Clients contact the CIT Accounts Office to request an e-mail alias be setup or that a new user be added to an existing e-mail alias.
  • The client should supply a suggested alias name, the justification for the alias, the username of the responsible individual along with his/her campus address, phone number, and email address, and a list of usernames that need to be added to the alias.
  • Once the e-mail alias has been created the CIT Accounts office will notify the requester via e-mail.
